Amplification of the Categories for the
MINISTER EVALUATION FORM FOR WEDDING MINISTRY
** For the reference of the evaluator at the time of the interview
** At the discretion of the interviewer, for the preparation of the candidate prior to the interview
** For separate SELF?EVALUATION
Assign a value from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) to each category.
1. LANGUAGE ABILITY
Pronunciation (especially the distinction between long and short vowel sounds, the correctness of the final gnh sound, etc.), sentence construction (use of "wa/ga," "ni/de," etc.), appropriate use of polite terms.
2. CEREMONIAL ATMOSPHERE
An adequate degree of solemnity/formality, culturally appropriate words and phrases ?? expressions which are expected in a solemn setting or celebration and which help to create an atmosphere in which Japanese listeners will feel "at home."
3. DELIVERY
Audience contact, clear voice, communication through face and eyes. Whether or not mechanical, monotonous. Appropriate level of feeling/emotion. Thoughtful pauses.
4. CEREMONY CONTENT
Logical order, coherence, progression. Proper length ?? according to the needs of the company being dealt with.
5. MINISTER'S DEMEANOR
Confidence, air of authority, indication that he is thinking of the meaning of his words as he speaks.
6. PERSONALITY CHARACTERISTICS
Mannerisms ?? pleasing or disconcerting. The atmosphere his person creates.
7. PHILOSOPHY OF CONDUCTING CHAPEL WEDDINGS
Rationale for conducting "chapel weddings." Purpose, goals. What does the candidate expect to achieve through his presentation? On what basis does he feel himself qualified?8. PERSONAL APPEARANCE
This category cannot be adequately evaluated at the time of an informal, private interview. Therefore request a response to the question: "What do you see as appropriate attire (1) for the ceremony and (2) for before and after the ceremony?")
(The candidate must evidence awareness of and/or sensitivity to the matter of cultural appropriateness in relation to attire. For a solemn occasion in the Japanese culture the shirt must be white. The color and style of the gown should be chosen with due respect to cultural expectations. If a suit is to be worn instead of a gown, careful consideration should be given to the cultural standard for such occasions of a black suit with a white tie. At least, both the suit and tie should be in the best of taste for the culture ?? dark and plain. Good taste should likewise be expressed in dress both prior to and after the ceremony ?? that is, when not in ceremonial garb but when being seen by the guests.)
9. EVANGELISTIC CONTENT
Is the Christian message expressed in gentle, non?intimidating fashion but yet in terms that will aid in moving the non?believer toward consideration of the Gospel? Does the candidate avoid the impression of "holding the audience captive" (both in content and in length) in his concern to "preach the gospel?"
10. GENERAL IMPRESSIONS
Impressions related to or other than the above categories.
Comments:
Note: It must be remembered that, even though all categories are assigned an equal number of points, categories 1 through 4 carry far greater weight than the others which follow ?? yes, even more than number 9, because these first four can either diminish greatly the effect of our "message" or else serve to make it more appealing.
A total score of 70 is considered passing.

RE: CERTIFICATION FOR MINISTERING AT WEDDING CHAPELS
Paul said, "I magnify my office" (Romans 11:13). How do we magnify ours? With sincerity? With proper preparation? With quality service?
A group of missionaries who are concerned about both the evangelistic potential in and the misguided approaches to "chapel wedding evangelism" have formed a network for information and for assistance to those who cannot yet officially qualify as ordained or licensed ministers.
We are painfully aware that much of the "witness" purported to be in the name of Christ actually brings shame upon His cause by improper attitudes, shoddy methods, and lack of qualifications in both language and cross?cultural awareness.
We would like to offer a screening process for those of uncertain qualifications with the purpose of providing a certificate of recognition for chapel wedding ministry.
If you have a sincere heart for evangelism and desire to minister with quality, but feel yourself inadequate, or do not posses official papers of ministry, we would like to be of encouragement to you. We will evaluate your present qualifications and, where advisable, provide suggestions and materials for developing your abilities for this ministry.
We offer to you a group of veteran Japan missionaries as resource persons. This group is informally organized as a network of support with the common concern of providing wedding businesses with ministers who will give a quality ceremony that will be a credit to the Gospel and will help move people's hearts toward Christ.
